Coordination is a Verb: Coordinating School Health

The 2009 Coordinated School Health Conference was designed to help school health teams understand how important it is to approach health initiatives from a systems perspective at the district level. The approach requires rigorous process planning to assure that local needs are addressed though relevant and research base methods that drive toward positive and sustainable health and education outcomes for Ohio students. The process requires

  • Looking at local data

  • Engaging a critical mass of district leaders, community leaders, parents and school staff

  • Increasing communication about health and achievement and

  • Establishing and enforcing proper health policy in school districts.

The State Planning Committee for Health Education in Ohio (SPCHEO) is making available $500 mini grants to schools that attended the 2009 conference to implement Coordinated School Health initiatives that are relevant to the needs of their student populations. In order to be eligible for funding, schools must

  • Have sent a team to the 2009 Coordinated School Health Conference

  • Attend the November 9, 2009 grant writing workshop at the American Cancer Society, 5555 Frantz Road, Dublin, OH 43017

  • Complete the application packet and email it to Bridget DeCrane by February 15, 2010.

Applications will be reviewed by the SPCHEO grants review team using the evaluation criteria provided in the Selection Process section of this application.

Catch Program

The Ohio Department of Education is offering CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Student Health) Programs and training to schools with a coordinated school health team in place.

CATCH is the coordinated approach to child health.  The goal of CATCH is to affect children's attitudes and behaviors towards nutrition and physical activity.  It is the largest school-based promotion study that has been done in the United States.  CATCH was shown to improve children's food and activity behaviors, increase levels of activity in physical education classes, and reduce the fat content of school lunches.
